E-Prescriptions
E-Prescriptions is a feature which can be turned on, allowing you to dispense electronic prescriptions. Speak to our 'Compound Direct' team on how this tool may be able to help your business and to enable E-prescriptions.
Scanning an E-prescription
- Go to the âDraftsâ page.
- Click on the 'Scan Token' button.
- Search for the E-prescription by either:
- Typing or scanning the token number and pressing enter.
- Uploading an image or pdf of the e-prescription which will automatically recognise a valid barcode or will prompt you to highlight the area containing the barcode. If the prescription is recognised, a copy of the file will be saved under âFilesâ.
- Scanning the barcode with your devices camera if available by clicking the photo_camera 'Scan' button.
- Multiple tokens can be searched at the same time.

When searching for multiple E-prescriptions from different patients, each new patient will be added to the queue for importing after the current patient draft is complete.

- If the customer on the prescription does not have a recorded independent healthcare identifier (IHI), an alert will appear to 'Review customer to continue'.
- Click on the 'Review' or 'Create New Patient' button under 'Patient'.
- 'Review' - This will display matching customers which have been found with similar details. Select the correct patient to assign the IHI number to. Click 'View' to see further customer details.
- Click 'Next' once the desired customer has been selected.
- Review items and select if you would like to overwrite or keep the information.
- Click 'Show More' to see all the patients information.
- Click 'Confirm & Save' to save the changes.
- 'Create New Patient' - This will create a new customer with the details on the prescription and will assign the IHI to this new patient.
- Once the E-prescription has been found and the customer has a matching IHI, the prescription details retrieved from the exchange are displayed including:
- The token number is shown at the top with the 'date prescribed' and 'script status' labels.
- The doctors name and address.
- Number of repeats and if brand substitutions are allowed.
- An indicator if the prescriptions is 'Send to Pharmacy'
- Drug name, instructions and formula.
- Click 'Show More' to see 'note from prescriber' and any 'annotations' from previous pharmacists.
- If there is a patient on file with matching information, you will be asked to confirm that you wish to use this patient or create a new patient.
- If there are multiple patients on file with information matching the E-prescription, you will be asked to select which patient this E-prescription applies to.
- Under 'Patient' the patients name, address and medicare information is shown.
- Click on the 'Review Patient Details' button to display any outdated items.

Occasionally after retrieving information from the exchange, the details retrieved do not match the details entered into Compound Direct. These differences can be manually reconciled before continuing, otherwise they will be reconciled automatically.
- For each item select if you would like to overwrite or keep the information.
- Click 'Show More' to see all the patients information.
- Once changes have been selected, click on the 'Confirm & Save' button to save the changes.

- Click on the 'Review Patient Details' button to display any outdated items.
- To remove an E-prescription from the import list, click on three vertical dots and click 'Remove'.
- Once changes are finalised click on the 'Create Drafts' button to continue.
Editing a draft E-Prescription

Once an E-prescription token has been added and you have clicked 'Create Draft', a draft of the imported prescription will be automatically generated with the prescription particulars including:
- Patient information.
- Doctor information.
- Prescription instructions.
- Repeats total and left.
- Compound name.

Formulation details such as the dosage form, final units, wastage and ingredients must be filled out as required.

Under 'Prescription' an automatically generated copy of the original is displayed.

Click on the three vertical dots under 'Prescription' for a list of options:
- 'Add annotation': Add any relevant annotations which will be added to the E-prescription and will be included in the token for the next pharmacy/pharmacist.
- 'View dispensed history': View a list of previous dispensings for review.
- Click 'More options' - 'Reconcile with existing script': :This will link this E-prescription with an existing prescription that has been dispensed previously. This is used for emergency prescriptions which have been dispensed before the E-prescription has been received. Enter the prescription number of the emergency supply to reconcile with the E-prescription.
- Click 'More options' - 'E-prescription settings': Under
Active Script List Consent
you can select if the patient consents for this E-prescription to be included on the patient's active prescription list. UnderKeep at Pharmacy
select if the token will be sent to the patient.

Scripts will not be submitted to the active script list if 'Keep token private to the pharmacy' is selected, No evidence of prescription can be printed, No token can be sent to the patient. A reason must be provided for selecting this option.
- Click 'More options' - 'Set E-Prescription Contact': Select which email or mobile will be used to send the repeat token and the preferred contact details.
- Click 'More options' - 'Download audit logs': Click on this to download a detailed log for the E-prescription.

Ensure the pharmacist is satisfied with all aspects of the draft's formulation, prescription, and risk-management.

The pharmacist can proceed with selecting âDispenseâ located at the top of the page.
Viewing a dispensed E-prescription

Dispensed E-Prescriptions will attempt to send a copy to the prescription exchange to record the dispensed status. The status of the submission is shown under 'E-Prescription'.
- If the submission status is 'Submission error', click on the three vertical dots and click 'Retry Submission' to try resending to the exchange.

Click on the three vertical dots under 'E-Prescription' for a list of options:

'Add annotation': Add any relevant annotations which will be added to the E-prescription and will be included in the token for the next pharmacy/pharmacist.

'View dispensed history': View a list of previous dispensings for review.

Click 'More options' - 'Set E-Prescription Contact': Select which email or mobile will be used to send the repeat token and the preferred contact details. This option is unavailable if the E-prescription already been submitted to the exchange.

Click 'More options' - 'Download audit logs': Click on this to download a detailed log for the E-prescription.

Once the E-Prescription has been successfully submitted to the exchange, the repeat token (if any) can be re-sent to the patient by clicking on the three vertical dots and selecting 'Resend Token'. Select the preferred contact method then click send. If an alternative email or mobile is needed, please update the patient record.

To print a copy of the prescription, click on the three vertical dots and click on 'Evidence of Prescription'. Select your printer and press 'Print' or download a copy of the prescription.

Click on the âMore Actionsâ drop-down menu for a list of options including deleting the prescription.

To create a repeat E-prescription, click on 'Create repeat' under 'Repeat history'.
Editing an E-Prescription
- Once an E-prescription has been sent to the exchange, special precaution must be taken when editing to ensure the prescription remains in sync with the exchange.
- To edit an E-prescription which has already been sent to the exchange, you may:
- Delete the prescription by clicking on the âMore Actionsâ drop-down menu and selecting 'Delete'.
- Deleting the prescription will attempt to automatically reverse the dispensing from the exchange.
- If reversal from the exchange fails, this can be manually done by a pharmacist user with a valid HPII by clicking on the three vertical dots and clicking 'Retry Reverse'.

Users which are not pharmacists and without authentication may still delete the dispensed prescription however will not automatically trigger deletion from the exchange. This must be manually performed by a pharmacist.
- Edits can now be made in the drafts section.
- Edit the dispensed prescription by clicking on the edit button seen when hovering over patient details.
- Edits made to the prescription will prompt an automatic sync to the exchange.
- If the automatic sync fails, this can be manually done by clicking on the three vertical dots and clicking 'Retry Submission' to try resending to the exchange.
- Delete the prescription by clicking on the âMore Actionsâ drop-down menu and selecting 'Delete'.
Deferring an E-Prescription
- Deferred E-prescriptions are a special case when multiple medications are included on the same token.
- To defer a medication, click on the three vertical dots and select defer.
- When a medication in a token is selected to be deferred, it will be automatically sent to the exchange and dispensed with 0 units. This will record the medication as dispensed on the exchange however, marked as deferred on Compound Direct. The customer will be sent a new token which may be used when the deferred item is required.
