Dosage Forms

A thoughtful dosage form setup is the starting point of every great formula.

Learn how you can create and configure dosage forms so you can streamline compounding, reduce formulation errors, and maintain consistency across your workflow. Dosage forms act as a framework that controls how each formulation is calculated, displayed, and dispensed. They influence everything from how ingredient strengths are entered, to how labels are printed, devices are selected, and time and cost are estimated.

  • By setting up dosage forms thoughtfully, you can save time on repetitive tasks, ensure clinical accuracy, and build a solid foundation for how your team prepares and manages compounded products. Whether you’re creating new dosage forms or refining existing ones, this guide will walk you through each setting and explain how it contributes to a more reliable and efficient process.

Here’s what you can do with dosage forms:

  • Set default calculation methods and unit formats so each formulation behaves consistently, whether you’re working in weight, volume, or percentage-based inputs.
  • Define how the dosage form appears on the label, control how strength is displayed, and choose whether to include or exclude the dosage form next to the quantity for clearer, more accurate documentation.
  • Link base ingredients, assign default devices, set average labour times for quoting, and apply expiry rules and formulation steps so you can reduce manual setup and make the preparation process faster, more consistent, and less prone to error.

With these settings in place, dosage forms do more than guide formulation, they help standardise your workflow, improve accuracy, and support high-quality compounding every time.

Creating a new dosage form

  1. Go to the ā€˜Settings’ page.
  2. Click on the ā€˜Dosage Forms’ button.
  3. Click on the ā€˜Create Dosage Form’ button.
  4. Add an appropriate
    prefix and suffix
    book

    Prefix and Suffix

Prefixes and suffixes help classify dosage forms and provide context, making products easier to manage. E.g., prefixes like N/S, GCP, or Trial and suffixes like Otic, Topical, or Vaginal.

that will appear at the beginning and end of the compound name when creating a formula.
  5. Select the appropriate 'Route of Administration' for the new Dosage Form.
  6. Enter the appropriate Units for the new Dosage Form and click 'Append to quantity' to choose either
Append to quantity or Exclude from label
    book

Append to quantity vs Exclude from label

Configure how the dosage form is displayed on the label. Selecting 'Append to quantity' includes the dosage form beside the quantity and compound name, while 'Exclude from the label' omits it.

    .
  7. Upload an 'image' for this dosage form which will be shown when preparing quotes and orders.
  8. Select the appropriate 'calculation method' from the list below for the new dosage form. This will apply to all future and past formulas created with this dosage form.

This calculation type is used when preparing capsules and will include the packing statistics in the calculation.

  1. Select the 'desired final units' and default wastage percent to be applied as default for the new dosage form or leave blank for flexibility.
  2. Select the desired default base ingredient by typing its name into the search bar under Default Base Ingredient. This base will appear by default whenever creating a new formulation with the new dosage form.
    • Only ingredients marked as a base will be available for selection. See How to create a new ingredient tutorial on how to add an ingredient as a base.
  3. Select the appropriate number of days till expiry which will apply for all formulations in that dosage form.
  4. Under ā€˜Average Labour Duration’ add how long the dosage form takes to dispense and compound on average.
  5. Select a

    1. Click the 'Add Device' button.
    2. Select the check_circle_outline icon beside the device name to add relevant devices to the dosage form including packaging and compounding devices such as empty capsules. Ensure only one variant for each device is selected as the default.
    3. Click Done once all relevant devices have been added. Devices linked to a dosage form are tracked during formulation. You can use auto select or adjust quantity settings as needed.
