Dosage Forms

Create and save dosage form information here to level-up your formulations. Dosage forms can store default calculation, preparation and pricing information to maximise efficiency. Furthermore, they can be linked with consumable items to keep track of stock on hand.

Creating a new dosage form

  1. Go to the ‘Settings’ page.
  2. Click on the ‘Dosage Forms’ button.
  3. Click on the ‘Create Dosage Form’ button.
  4. Enter the technical and short name of the Dosage Form.
    • Hint: The short name will be displayed at the end of the compound name when creating a formula.
  5. Select the appropriate Route of Administration for the new Dosage Form.
  6. Enter the appropriate Units for the new Dosage Form and click ‘Append to quantity’ oto choose either ‘Append to quantity’ or ‘Exclude from label’.
  7. Upload an image for this dosage form which will be shown when preparing quotes and orders.
  8. Select the appropriate calculation type from the list below for the new dosage form. This will apply to all future and past formulas created with this dosage form.
    1. Capsule: This calculation type is used when preparing capsules and will include the packing statistics in the calculation.
      1. Select whether to display formulation strengths as a percentage or not.
      • When the ‘Capsule’ calculation type is selected an option to set a ‘Default capsule size’ appears in ‘Compounding Defaults’. This allows creation of multiple capsule dosage forms.
    2. Liquid (w/v): This calculation type is used when liquid formulations are calculated by mass per volume.
      1. Select whether to display formulation strengths as a percentage or not.
      2. Liquid bases will be required to be QS'd to the final quantity.
    3. Liquid (v/v): This calculation type is used when liquid formulations are calculated by volume.
      1. Select whether to display formulation strengths as a percentage or not.
      2. Liquid bases will be required to be QS'd to the final quantity.
    4. Solid (w/w): This calculation type is used for example in creams.
      1. Type in the desired multiplier which the base quantity will be multiplied by, under ‘Base Quantity Multiplier’.
      2. Select whether to display formulation strengths as a percentage or not.
    5. Powder: This calculation type is used when products are sold in a powder form.
      1. Type in the appropriate weight in grams for each scoop/pouch under ‘portion size’.
      2. Select whether to display formulation strengths as a percentage or not.
    6. Molded (w/w): Used for suppositories/troches/pessaries/gummies/chocolates etc.
      1. Add the blank base weight of the mold with no active and add the power displacement.
        1. Recommendation from PCCA is 70.
        2. For each ingredient there is a displacement which is inherited from the dosage form unless you override and can see the article from the PCCA.
        3. Override once editable between 70 and 100.
  9. Select the desired final units and wastage percent to be applied as default for the new dosage form or leave blank for flexibility.
    • Desired final units are helpful for common quantities specific to certain dosage. E.g. if Oral Liquids are commonly compounded for 100 mL, set the default final units to 100 to save time creating new formulations.
  10. Select the desired default base ingredient by typing its name into the search bar under ‘Default Base Ingredient’. This base will appear by default whenever creating a new formulation with the new dosage form.
    • Only ingredients marked as a base will be available for selection. See How to create a new ingredient tutorial on how to add an ingredient as a base.
  11. Select the appropriate number of days till expiry which will apply for all formulations in that dosage form.
  12. Under ‘Average Labour Duration’ add how long the dosage form takes to dispense and compound on average.
  13. Select a default device to be used for the dosage form by clicking the ‘Add Device’ button. Add relevant devices to the dosage form including packaging and compounding devices such as empty capsules. Ensure only one variant for each device is selected as the default.
    1. The devices added to the dosage form are tracked when used in a formulation.
  14. Select default formulation steps to be used for the dosage form by clicking the ‘Add Step’ button. Add relevant steps to the dosage form including steps prior to compounding and steps during compounding. standard Package
